Safe & Effective Pediatric Sedation Dentistry Near Eastvale

If you have ever had an anxiety attack, or if you experience “white coat syndrome” when going to the dentist, you understand how paralyzing fear can be. While we go the extra mile to make our patients feel safe and welcome, anxiety can still be crippling for many.

Kids Dental Specialists is proud to offer pediatric sedation to help patients feel more relaxed. We have different methods of sedation available to ensure each person is able to receive the care they need.

Types of Sedation

We offer two types of sedation that may be recommended according to the exam or procedure being performed. Each has its own set of benefits and potential side effects, so we carefully evaluate each child individually to determine the method best for them.

Nitrous Oxide

Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is generally recommended for children who are overly nervous or anxious. The method involves placing a small mask over the child’s nose, making the combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen easy to inhale.

This option does not put the child to sleep – they are completely awake during the procedure. They may temporarily feel elated, but once the mask is removed, the effects wear off quickly. When the exam or procedure is over, the nitrous oxide is shut off, and only pure oxygen is delivered. This helps eliminate any remaining nitrous oxide from the body.

While there are typically no lingering side effects, nitrous oxide can cause mild nausea, so we will recommend avoiding large meals and fatty foods before the appointment.

IV Sedation

Some children may benefit from a more meaningful sedation, which is delivered intravenously. This is usually recommended for patients who need extensive dental work, may behave uncooperatively, or have extraordinary anxiety. If this is the recommended type of sedation, patients will be required to prepare prior to the appointment.

We may ask you to provide current medical records from your child’s physician, and to limit your child’s food and drink that day. We also ask that you plan to stay after the appointment, and wait to make sure there are no side effects.

At times, certain medical issues may deem their dental procedure more suitable for a hospital environment. We work with board-certified pediatric anesthesiologists that will ensure your child’s expert care for the duration of their procedure. Our staff will consult with you about this and address any concerns you may have well before the appointment.
